Get your kilt on and your Scottish blood pumping for the 54th Mount Barker Highland Gathering. There'll be Pipe Bands, Scottish Highland and Country Dancers, Strongman displays, stalls, Clan tents, community activities and a whole lot of fun for all the family!
The New date for the Mt Barker Highland Gathering is
9th October 2016
Keith Stephenson Park Mt Barker, less than half an hour’s drive from the city, this all-ages daytime community event encompasses the best of Celtic dance, music and sport. Come along and help us celebrate this anniversary of true Scottish fun and fellowship.
The main arena at the oval will be a continuous hub of activity, with demonstrations of Scottish Country Dancing and Celtic Broadsword displays. The Gathering will also host various contests such as Pipe Bands, Highland Dancers and others who come to compete, perform and display their amazing skills. The South Australian Pipe Band Association bring together bands from across South Australia and interstate, culminating in the magnificent massed pipes and drums leading the grand Parade at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Then there's the Caber Toss, Haggis Hurl, Tug-O-War and knobby knees competition. Each of these are open to anyone to participate in. The Border Celts, Adelaide Country Dancers, Faire D'Ophelia, Society for Creative Anachronism, Sword Fighting and Archers will all be there.
The 2016 Strongman competition sees a variety of unique events, such as heavy stone lifting, motor vehicle pulling and other feats you definitely shouldn’t try at home! Meanwhile, South Australia’s premier Highland Dancing competitors will leap and fling their way throughout the day’s events on the dance stage.
It would not be a ‘Gathering’ without bringing together the various Clan Groups and Scottish Societies from across South Australia. They will be available to provide information about their history, background and whether you might be a long-lost relative! These groups can be seen in all their glory as the massed bands accompany them in the Grand March.
Whether you’re interested in tracing your Scottish roots, keen to check out the best Celtic groups South Australia has to offer or simply looking for a great family day out, come be a part of the 54th Mount Barker Highland Gathering!
